how does this work exactly? 

You log into a server and you spawn here?

Then what?

Say i want to create a private competition server and i want people to join in the lobby before it goes live and then they auto spawn in main map when everyone has joined?

trying to understand how a lobby works.

This lobby is just a decorative part. All the functionality that you need, you need to implement through plugins
