This error comes from the unity engine not skinner its self. Its possible that you have a corrupt imported skin, but it could be anything...

I tested with the latest version and there werent issues seeing the skins. Can you let me know if the latest version fixes the issue for you?

I'm not sure why users would complain about having access to more skins... what are your Skin Import Settings in your config ? you may have to clear your PlayerUsageData file in data/skinner -
this was fixed in 2.9.94
