Facepunch cracking down on non ownership of dlc/skins

Interesting

It seems facepunch are going to stop the use of dlc/skins if you do not own them

Can I grant use of Facepunch DLC to users if they don't own it? No - you must not grant access to any Facepunch DLC to players who have not validly purchased it. Servers may not bypass ownership checks or artificially enable Facepunch DLC

what is everyone's thought on this

My provider has already warned me about this , Not sure if every one will do the same to their clients.

Just a heads-up for all Rust server owners and plugin users. Facepunch has updated their official Community Server and Hosting Guidelines as of July 15, 2025, with a major change that's going to affect a lot of servers.

Starting August 7, 2025, you won't be allowed to give players access to paid DLC they don't actually own. This includes things like:

- Official Rust DLC (building skins, instruments, furniture, etc.)

- Approved Steam Marketplace skins and cosmetics

- Any other paid content from Facepunch

You can still:

- Use unapproved Workshop skins (as long as they're not official DLC)

- Monetize your server with donations, subscriptions, or ads

- Use plugins like SkinBox, but only with non-DLC skins

Please note, any services in breach of this may be blacklisted by Facepunch and in turn may lead to termination of the service.

For anyone wondering which DLC items they need to remove from loot tables: https://carbonmod.gg/references/items/?dlcsOnly=1

Death will we see the removal of these mods from the shop?

They even talk about being banned so it is not worth the risk is it?

it was good while it lasted but what shits me is they stole ideas from some of the mods (backpack)

No. These plugins can still be used on creative and test servers. They also include config settings to disable approved skins which you can already do. Any plugin that does not can easily check if the player owns the item first so I don't expect many plugins to be affected by this.

I'm from a small community server and my admins are really confused about this and it's been a hot topic of debate.

We're a vanilla pve server, with pvp/raiding in certain areas of the map. admins are regular players, while having admin authority to maintain structure and rules.

The admins have their own paid dlc/skins and everything else like regular players, they own, if players are allowed to set up vendies for their skins and distribute, the admins are thinking they're not allowed to do the same thing anymore. there's no skinbox or other plugins that are enabling free skins.

are they still allowed to use/sell for ingame currency and items their skins like regular players? Or freely come deco something you built on request? "Hey can you give me that milk fridge" in pops an admin with a spray can "sure!" no money traded or items required just free on request because they own that skin. is that not allowed? if the admins can't use their own paid skins why would anyone else be able to trade skins in game? are players no longer to sell/give their skins to each other?

some of them have rare/expensive/special edition skins they paid for at the time and on request can come skin your stuff, like some other players have arctic or abyss hazzies and sell them on vendies, and would come skin your fridge or something, like players decorate each others bases. is this no longer allowed on the simple basis that they're admins?

I feel like this whole thing is just like the wind—it'll blow over after a while. In the future, we might end up fully compromising, or maybe Facepunch will just turn a blind eye. After all, they're only warning us not to provide skins and DLCs anymore. If you're not afraid of the risks, you can still keep using them. With hundreds and thousands of servers out there, how can they monitor them all? It's highly likely they'll blacklist servers based on reports, similar to how they handle fake player counts. Of course, this is just my guess. Maybe they'll come up with better ways to monitor us.

I think admins can still apply skins and distribute them to players. This kind of operation can't be detected by the official. It's impossible that an entire server gets banned just because a player uses a skin they haven't purchased—otherwise, things would be a total mess. Of course, if someone maliciously reports a server, they might look into it, but I don't think they'll have the time to handle all of that.
