I'm so confused, do I have to separately host something for this to just do the function of the Discord Core plugin? Why am I supposed to pay $25 for this?

Yes you need a bot and other stuff - as described on the page. The point of it is to remove the workload from your server and move it to a bot. elsewhere - in theory improving performance.

So you're telling me that either you have to have your own machine to host or rent one from a company in order to run this plugin?

The page lists this:

Requirements/Dependencies

Web Server with MySQL, PHP

Server/Bot Container with NodeJS 12

Rust Server

Suggested Setup

Hetzner VPS ($3-4/month) - This will run the web server, MySQL, PHP, PHPMyAdmin & NodeJS.

Rust Server - Shared or dedicated does not matter!

Indeed, it does. But that doesn't really tell me if I absolutely need to self-host or not, is the thing. I can't justify the work of hosting something separately just to make something like this work. But it would be nice to have a Discord bot that messages newcomers to link their account, which I think this does(?). I just don't wanna be messing around with the additional hosting and all that. I've got enough on my plate already. But if I could just run it like any other plugin and not have to worry about running a machine for it, then that would be great.

Generally all of the systems like this that work across multiple servers require that, otherwise there is no way for it to communicate from one server to another. If you only have one server, then just use discord link from umod.

Man, that's a real bummer. Something like that would definitely boost account links for sure. At which point certainly justifies the price tag of the plugin. All that extra hassle and money to host, though, is what gets me.
