Is it possible to somehow add these items in the future so that they can be sold through vending machines, or is that already pushing the limits of what’s realistic?

Hi Stormo, the limit is the vending machine. The player owned vending machines only see the vanilla items when choosing items. 

 You can put the item in an NPC vending machine using custom vending setup,  but it will not display the correct item (it will maybe sell the custom item, but display the parent item. Not sure if the sale will be corret, not tested)

Using other sale/trade methods such as ShoppyStock or trade plugin, no problem, it should work just like vanilla items
