Combined Stacks

Is there a reason why it cannot combine stacks in your inventory with the backpack if the item is in there?

For example, I end up with 2 stacks of scrap. One in the backpack and one in the inventory. If they combined, I would gain another slot, but since they don't, I am showing as full.

Good catch. New pickups already top off stacks that are in the backpack, so if your inventory is full and you pick up scrap, it goes onto the scrap stack in the backpack instead of needing a new slot. What it doesn’t do yet is merge two stacks that are already split, one in your inventory and one in the backpack. Those stay separate, and that’s why the backpack shows as full.

For now, drag one stack onto the other and they’ll combine. I’m adding automatic merging of partial stacks between your inventory and the backpack to the list for the next update.

Fixed in 3.1.0, out now.

When the same item is split between your inventory and the backpack, the backpack half now merges into the inventory stack, so you get the slot back. It goes into the inventory on purpose, so you can still craft, build and reload with it.

It happens when you pick something up with a full backpack (the item then takes the freed slot instead of showing FULL) and every time the backpack sorts. It is on by default; you can turn it off with "Merge split stacks between the inventory and the backpack" in the config.

Thanks for the report!
