I can't say if it happened because of reskinning with the spray can but I would guess so.

Parked my waterbike and changed the skin with the spray can.

When trying to drive it drowned in the water and I couldn't use it anymore.

Snowmobiles actually get killed and spawned again when reskinning. Got this fixed in 1.1.6
