NPCs drop chests when their inventories are full. Can players see these chests? Would it be possible to add the option for them to build their own base so they're not constantly wandering around, thus making the game more realistic? Thanks.

You mean stashes? You can replace them with wooden boxes, or you can disable hiding stashes so it would be easier to find stashes by other players. Buildings addon is coming soon, they'll build bases and drop resources there
